Interior Design Estimate Template

Interior design clients compare quotes line by line, and most disputes start with a design fee that was never separated from construction. Split design, drawings and supervision from the build so the client sees what they are paying you for.

What to put on the quote

  • Which rooms and floor area the design covers, and how many revision rounds are included.
  • Whether furniture, lighting and appliances are supplied by you or only specified.
  • Who hires and pays the contractor, and whether supervision is charged separately.
  • Deliverables: layout, renders, construction drawings, material schedule.

Common mistakes

  • Quoting one lump sum for design and build, so the client cannot tell what a change costs.
  • No cap on revisions, which turns a four-week job into four months.
  • Not saying that renders are illustrations and finishes may vary slightly from the screen.

Deposit, balance and validity

A common split is 30% on signing, 40% when drawings are approved and 30% on handover. Keep the estimate valid for 30 days, because material prices move, and state that anything outside the agreed scope is priced as a change order before work starts.

Questions people ask

Should the design fee be credited if the client hires my build team?

Many studios credit part of it. If you do, write the credit and the condition on the estimate so it is not assumed later.

Do I charge per square foot or a flat fee?

Per area works for whole homes; a flat fee is clearer for single rooms. Either way, list the area or rooms the price is based on.

How many revisions should be included?

Two rounds on the layout and one on renders is typical. Price extra rounds per round so the client can decide.
