Welding & Fabrication Quote Template
Fabrication quotes come from small steel shops building railings, gates, stairs and repairs for homeowners, builders and businesses. The customer sees one piece; the quote should show steel, shop hours, finish and field install separately, because that is where the price really comes from.

What to put on the quote
- A drawing or sketch with dimensions, material sizes and grades, and who signed off the measurements.
- Finish system: galvanizing, primer and paint, or powder coat with color code, and what is touched up on site.
- Install conditions: what it anchors into, core drilling, access, and whether a lift is needed.
- Exclusions: concrete work, permits, engineering stamps, removing the old piece.
- Lead time from drawing approval, and the warranty on welds and finish.
Common mistakes
- Quoting from a phone photo and finding the wall is out of square or the stair rise is different.
- Forgetting cutting waste and drops when pricing steel by the pound.
- Promising a powder coat color before checking the coater’s minimums and lead time.
- Starting fabrication before the customer signs the drawing.
Deposit, balance and validity
Deposit 50% on signed drawings to buy steel and book the coater; balance on installation. Changes after drawings are approved are re-quoted, and field work outside regular hours is billed at time and a half. Quote valid for 14 days because steel prices move.
Questions people ask
Why is galvanizing a separate line?
It is done by an outside plant, priced by weight, and adds days to the lead time. Showing it separately lets you choose paint or powder coat instead.
Can you weld on site instead of in the shop?
Some repairs have to be done in place, but shop welding is cleaner, faster and usually cheaper. Field hours cost more because of travel and setup.
Do I need a permit for a new stair or railing?
That depends on your building department. We can supply drawings if one is required; the permit itself is listed as excluded unless agreed otherwise.
